An annual maintenance check and recharge by a trained person are mandatory. For optimum service, fire extinguishers require hydrostatic testing every 5 to 12 years by a trained person with suitable testing equipment and facilities. Meeting Fire Regulations
Fire regulations can be found in local municipal codes, State Laws and Regulations (CCR) and Federally (NFPA, CFR). These laws are enforceable by local and State Fire Marshals, OSHA, Police and Coast Guard for marine vessels. The fines range from comparable to a speeding ticket, up to a substantial financial hit to any business.
Insurance companies commonly suspend any liability or property policy upon inspection of fire code violations. All businesses and multi-family residential areas are required to have extinguishers provided to residents. Violations are received for failure to meet the minimum standards in basic prevention of fires.
NFPA Code 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers Section 6.3.1 details the frequency for fire extinguisher maintenance and their service by law. Fire extinguishers shall be subjected to maintenance at intervals of not more than one year, at the time of hydrostatic test, or when specifically indicated by an inspection or electronic notification. Extinguishers must be inconspicuously placed long paths of travel, where they will be readily accessible, no more than 75 feet from each other, with at least one per landing, and affixed in accordance to the American with Disabilities Act.
